This classic spiritual was considered for the summer pops concerts of my choir, the St. Paul's Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys in Boston, which long ago ran a summer music camp, Camp Duncan in Bethlehem, New Hampshire, and we made the rounds of the White Mountains/Franconia Notch area hotels and resorts with our wonderful songs. For some reason this number was eliminated, but it would have been a fabulous addition to our repertoire. Many thanks for posting it!

You don't understand anything about this past, this was a time when all adults had lived through the great depression and everyone had also lost at least one family member to either the first of second World war... people were surrounded by death and talking or singing about it was not odd... old people lived with their families and would die in the house, births had happened at home and when a baby wouldn't make it that would happen at home, in front of the entire family including rhe other children... of course they sang about heaven, they had a healthier understanding of life and death than we do.

We had a gray Country Squire and I remember my father saying he bought it because the GM wagon had the third seat facing backwards and he didn't want his kids staring at headlights during trips. Funny thing is, before we got out of town, we (4 children) would fold down both the second and third seats so we could have a large "playroom". Drove my father crazy. Seatbelts? There weren't any in the first place! He went on to a '64 Country Squire followed by a '67 Country Sedan (which was essentially a Country Squire without the fake wood or the third seat).
